Inauguration Day

While I had to work Inauguration day, I did manage to make a few excursions outside to see the happenings in downtown DC.

What did I see? Lots and lots of people. Everyone seemed enthusiastic and, for the most part, civilized. Lots and lots of Inaugural and President Obama merchandise.

I also saw lots and lots of trash. Everywhere! It seemed to glob up at the fences and barricades.

I also saw the last of the parade and was happy to have seen The Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA) band. Perfect timing! I got there just as they were announced!

I was also checking out the Metro stations. I needed to get home! The stations were clear into them, but the platforms were full of people! Ick!

I was able to get home by @ 7:30 PM. It was nice to sleep in my own bed.

Its hard to imagine its been over a week. I find that when the President is going to speak, I turn up the radio instead of turning it off. I think that's a big improvement!

Workcation

I had never heard of the word "staycation" until my cousin used it. It means vacationing at home. Of course, once I learned of this word, I saw it used everywhere. I think, in part, because of the poor economy.

So that brings me to the word "workcation". 'Vacationing' at work, which is what I'm doing through Wednesday. As I support a 24/7/365(6) operations center in DC, we couldn't rely on being able to get into town should some issue arise. Thus, we are camping at the office.

Last night, the first, wasn't too bad; although I didn't sleep much. The cots that were supplied are not too bad. The office I'm camping out in has an air vent in the middle of the room, so I had blowing air in my face all night. I'll have to readjust the setting.

The room also has a TV, so I watched The Mentalist last night. It was ok.

There is also a clock in the room. As it turns out it is a little over an hour ahead. So I was up a little before 5 AM! I took a shower, got dressed, checked in with the client, and got breakfast at a bagel place.

Downtown DC, at least near the Mall, has become "Porta Potty" town. I'm sure The Caucus Room is just pleased as punch to be hosting their own little strip of them!

I did manage to have dinner with SU last night. I wasn't sure how the crowds would be after the concert and speech at the Lincoln Memorial. I was pleasantly surprised that people acted civilly and things moved along swimmingly.

Two more days.

Ramblings

Ok. I know I haven't posted in a while. The Holidays kept us busy. We went to the SU's parents house for part of the holidays and that ended up with me getting a major head cold which then moved into bronchitis and sinus infection. Needless to say, all I did was rest.

The SU got sick the later that week and somehow hurt his back. So we were both sick and his back hurt. It hurt so much he was using very uncivilized language; which is how I knew it really hurt. However, with some medication he was able to move along. He's doing much better now.

I have been quilting the baby quilt for Baby H and am near completion. Somehow a pin got into or behind one of the applique circles and I'm determining the best course of action!

I'm also taking a beginner knitting class which was a lot of fun and boosted my confidence in my knitting skills. The second class is the following week. I've scheduled myself for a class on knitting a beanie hat. SU is very excited about that because he seems to lose his hat with somewhat frequency.

My ultimate goal is to be knitting socks by the end of the year. Holly, at KnitHappens, seems to think this is very doable. Its a good thing she is a great instructor and specializes in socks!

I've noticed that knitting seems to help my hands - they feel a lot more flexible. I've also noticed that as I've been practicing, I'm able to knit longer.

All of this means that I'm way behind on blogging and reading blogs. I plan on resuming soon.

Happy New Year!
